Isobel Phoebus, BSc, MSc, RPBio

Wildlife Ecologist

Isobel is a professional biologist holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Environmental Science, with over 8 years of experience focusing on wildlife and vegetation ecology and management. Her thesis analyzed large carnivore use of riparian buffers along streams (forested strips left after timber harvest) and evaluated ecological implications for forest management in Alberta. She then worked as a contributing scientist for a grizzly bear program in the Canadian Rockies, applying ecological research to manage and conserve wildlife. Isobel holds a skill set that combines scientific expertise in field-based and research projects. She has expertise in remote fieldwork, wildlife protocols, plant identification, data management and analysis, project management, science communication and partner collaboration.

Isobel is also a science instructor on tuition-free, alpine wilderness science immersion expeditions with Girls on Ice Canada, which take place in the unceded land of the Sinixt, Secwépemc, Syilx, Shuswap, Okanagan and Ktunaxa peoples. She brings her expertise and enthusiasm of science and wildlife to build courage, confidence, and environmental stewardship in the next generation of leaders.

Outside of her time in the field or office, Isobel is usually out adventuring in the mountains. She can be found climbing on big rock walls and frozen waterfalls, slacklining over canyons and crevasses, ski touring across mountain ranges or traversing Canada’s highest peaks.
